Economic Resilience in Yobe: Traders Seek Strategic Government Support
In a decisive move to revitalize commerce and strengthen the local economy, the business community in Yobe State has issued a formal appeal to the state government for targeted financial assistance and infrastructure development. The call was led by Alhaji Umar Usman Jibrin, the newly inaugurated Chairman of the United Marketers Association, Potiskum (UMAPO).
Speaking shortly after his executive council’s inauguration, Jibrin highlighted the precarious state of many small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs). He noted that limited capital is currently hindering the ability of traders to sustain their livelihoods and support their families, making government intervention a matter of urgency.
Empowering SMEs and Promoting Financial Inclusion
The UMAPO Chairman emphasized that government intervention should go beyond supporting new startups. Instead, he advocated for soft loans and improved access to finance that would allow existing market women, traders, and artisans to expand their operations. Such support is viewed as essential for building economic resilience in a region that has faced significant challenges due to the Boko Haram insurgency.
“Strong government backing will not only foster growth but also attract more visitors and investors to Yobe,” Jibrin stated, underscoring the potential for a ripple effect across the state’s commercial landscape.
Critical Infrastructure Needs
Beyond financial aid, the association identified several infrastructure deficits that require immediate attention to improve the trading environment. Key demands include:
- The reconstruction of the perimeter fence at the NPN market to address security concerns and protect goods.
- The development of modern, standard markets specifically for rice and fruit sellers.
- General upgrades to traditional markets to resolve long-standing issues regarding inadequate amenities and safety.
A New Era for UMAPO Leadership
The inauguration marks a significant turning point for UMAPO following a prolonged leadership dispute. The Yobe State Ministry of Youth, Sports, Social and Community Development officially endorsed the new committee after a consensus was reached by the association’s Board of Trustees and Committee of Elders, resolving the friction between former factions.
The newly recognized leadership, which will serve a four-year tenure, is headed by Chairman Umar Usman Jibrin and Secretary Alhaji Ibrahim Abubakar. The state government has directed the new executives to prioritize transparency, unity, and effective administration as they work to reposition the association for sustainable progress and inclusive growth for all members.
