ASABA – In a significant stride towards environmental sustainability, Chevron Nigeria Limited has announced a remarkable 98 percent reduction in gas flaring. This achievement was disclosed by Oduselu Olusoga, the company's General Manager of Corporate Affairs, during a workshop on Oil and Gas reporting in Asaba, Delta State, in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
Olusoga, represented by Dr. Victor Anyaegbuduke, Chevron’s Manager of Communications, noted that the reduction in gas flaring has been achieved over the past ten years. He explained that the company has successfully gathered and treated gas before supplying it to the domestic market.
Olusoga emphasized the company's focus on cleaner energy and environmentally safe oil production, stating, "What we are looking for is cleaner energy, cleaner oil, environmentally safe production of oil.”
Furthermore, he highlighted Chevron's ongoing commitment to Nigerian content development, revealing that the company invests one million dollars annually in this initiative. This financial support aims to bolster local content and development within the communities it operates in.
Chevron has also pioneered the Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMOU), established in 2005 to foster a participatory partnership model. The GMOU allows local communities to take ownership of the development process, empowering them to identify their needs and priorities.
According to Olusoga, community members are now integral to the decision-making process. They will create a five-year development plan, determining essential needs such as hospitals, water, and electricity. Chevron provides the necessary funding and collaborates with NGOs to oversee the projects.
During the event, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, Chairman of the NUJ Delta State Council, expressed excitement about the partnership with Chevron for the capacity-building program. He recognized the oil and gas industry's critical role in Nigeria's economy, energy security, and overall national development.
Oyowe reiterated the NUJ Delta State's commitment to continuous professional development, stating that well-trained journalists contribute significantly to public interest and uphold the profession's credibility. He stressed that effective oil and gas journalism necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the industry's intricacies, including its value chain, regulatory framework, environmental issues, and community relations.
