ABUJA – Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has vehemently denied endorsing any candidate for the Rivers State governorship or any other political office, with the sole exception of President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking to a combined assembly of All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stakeholders at his Life Camp residence in Abuja on Monday night, Wike made his position clear regarding the forthcoming 2027 general elections. He underscored that his only current political allegiance is to President Tinubu, a commitment he has consistently upheld.
Wike’s Firm Stance on Rivers State Politics
The former Rivers State Governor asserted that the errors of past election cycles would not be repeated. He issued a stern warning to aspirants, emphasizing that no state governor would be allowed to impose a candidate on Rivers State.
Wike also acknowledged the pivotal role played by the Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Martin Amaewhule, in shaping the state's political landscape.
He urged members of the joint coalition to maintain their dedication to the best interests of Rivers State, clarifying that only those genuinely committed to this collective cause would ultimately benefit.
Unity Over Ambition: A Call to Action
The Minister cautioned against the premature race for endorsements and warned against the internal schisms that personal ambitions can foster within political groups. He stressed that the current strength of their collective was forged through unity and unwavering commitment, rather than financial leverage.
Wike specifically highlighted the presence of external forces actively seeking to sow discord among stakeholders, precisely because of their successful collaboration.
- “If we were not working together, if we were not united, it would be difficult. People are not happy that we are working together, so they will do anything to ensure we are divided,” Wike stated, underscoring the external threats to their cohesion.
Addressing Disloyalty and Upholding Integrity
Expressing profound disappointment, Wike criticised individuals who, after securing appointments facilitated by the group, have turned to lambaste its leadership. He condemned such behavior as a fundamental failure of character, asserting that attempts to undermine others through deceit would inevitably fail.
Clarifying persistent rumours about private endorsements for elective political positions, Wike firmly dismissed them, reiterating that his public and private declarations remain consistent. He maintained that the only endorsement currently recognized by the group is for the Presidency, specifically for President Tinubu.
Wike lauded the diligent coordination efforts of the Council Chairmen, Rivers elders, and the leadership of both parties in successfully bringing stakeholders together. He cited the absence of complaints regarding inclusiveness as clear evidence of the meeting's triumph in fostering unity and shared purpose.
