The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, has disclosed that the Command has commenced an orderly room trial of two officers, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, over alleged extortion.
The officers, attached to ‘C’ Division, Asaba, were seen in a viral video collecting money from a motorist inside the station using a POS machine.
The Commissioner described the incident, which occurred on January 13, 2026, as unprofessional and embarrassing, adding that it amounts to conduct unbecoming of police officers.
He condemned the act, saying no citizen should be treated in such a manner by the police, and described their conduct as inexcusable and unpardonable.
He said the Command aligns with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, which prohibits extortion and the use of POS machines or any electronic payment platforms for transactions within police formations.
“No officer is authorised to demand or receive money from any member of the public under any guise.”
He assured that upon the conclusion of the disciplinary process, the outcome of the orderly room trial will be made public.
He warned that extortion and abuse of office will not be tolerated under his watch, adding that officers are expected to carry out their duties professionally and treat members of the public with respect.
He charged officers to uphold the tenets of professional policing in the discharge of their duties, with respect for the fundamental human rights of all citizens in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution.
He noted that the actions taken against the erring officers would serve as a deterrent to others.
