President's Foreign Trip Sparks Debate
Gbadebo Rhodes-Viviour, a former Lagos State governorship candidate, has voiced concerns over President Bola Tinubu's recent state visit to the United Kingdom, arguing that it provides little relief to Nigerians grappling with economic hardships and security issues.
In an interview with Channels Television's The Morning Brief on Tuesday, Rhodes-Viviour, now a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), criticized the president's timing, given the current challenges Nigerians face.
He stated, "The President has been frequently traveling abroad while Nigerians endure extreme hardships. This is unprecedented. Given the recent hike in fuel prices and the broader economic struggles, I question whether this visit is a priority for Nigerians."
Rhodes-Viviour acknowledged the visit's potential benefits for the president's image and his party but doubted its direct advantages for the Nigerian people.
His visiting and perhaps adding some legitimacy and credibility to his position as President is good for him, his optics, and his party. However, I don’t see how it is entirely good for the Nigerian people.
A Historic Visit Amid Criticism
President Tinubu's UK visit, accompanied by the First Lady and top officials, marks the first by a Nigerian leader in 37 years. The trip aims to strengthen ties with the former colonial power.
However, critics and opposition parties argue that the president should prioritize addressing domestic issues, especially after the recent deadly stampede at the church event, which highlighted security concerns.
Rhodes-Vivour emphasized the need for the government to focus on security and empathy for its citizens, suggesting that external pressure often prompts action on critical issues.
