Clarifying the Nigeria-UK Migration Agreement
Amidst growing concerns and misinformation, the Nigerian Presidency has issued a statement clarifying the nature of the recently signed migration deal with the United Kingdom.
According to Senior Special Assistant to the President, Temitope Ajayi, the agreement does not involve Nigeria accepting foreign deportees.
Focus on Nigerian Citizens
The deal, signed by Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, specifically addresses Nigerians residing illegally in the UK.
Mr. Ajayi stressed, 'The Nigerian government is not taking back non-Nigerians. This agreement solely relates to our citizens who lack legal status in the UK.'
Key Provisions of the Agreement
- Guarantees dignified treatment and retention of rights for returning Nigerian citizens.
- Allows for future re-entry if immigration requirements are met.
- Provides a detailed framework for secure travel, identity verification, and protection for vulnerable individuals.
- Establishes cooperation in areas like information sharing, training, and joint research on migration and border security.
The clarification aims to dispel misinformation and reassure the public about the agreement's scope and intent.
