Nigeria Addresses Migration Agreement Misunderstandings
The Nigerian Presidency has issued a statement to clarify misconceptions related to the recently signed migration agreement with the United Kingdom. The government insists that the deal specifically pertains to Nigerians who are illegally residing in the UK.
Clarifications from Presidential Media
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, made this clarification following reports that suggested Nigeria had consented to accept foreign deportees. Ajayi explained that the agreement is limited to Nigerians lacking legal status in the UK.
He stated, "For clarity, it is important to state that the agreement signed by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s state visit, on behalf of Nigeria, and UK Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, pertains solely to Nigerians without legal residency in the UK."
Key Points of the Agreement
Ajayi further confirmed: "The Nigerian government is not responsible for taking back non-Nigerians. The UK government will not force Nigeria to accept individuals who are not our citizens." This clarification comes amid concerns over misinformation surrounding the agreement.
Furthermore, Ajayi emphasized that the agreement ensures that any Nigerian citizens returned under this arrangement will be treated with dignity, remain protected by Nigerian law, and may reapply to enter the UK if they fulfill the necessary immigration criteria.
Framework for Dignified Returns
The Ministry of Interior contributed additional information, highlighting that the arrangement provides a framework for managing the dignified return and reintegration of Nigerians without legal residency in the UK. Key aspects include:
- Utilization of secure travel documentation
- Case-by-case identity verification
- Safeguards for vulnerable individuals, including potential trafficking victims
Broader Cooperation Efforts
The agreement also outlines areas for enhanced cooperation, such as:
- Information sharing
- Capacity building
- Training initiatives
- Joint research on migration management and border security
Context of the Agreement
This agreement was signed on Thursday as a measure to facilitate the repatriation of failed asylum seekers, visa overstayers, and convicted offenders, strengthening both migration control and bilateral relations between Nigeria and the UK.
According to the UK Home Office, the deal allows the UK to return individuals lacking a legal right to remain, including those who are failed asylum seekers and foreign national offenders. It also introduces administrative changes to streamline deportations, such as permitting Nigeria to accept 'UK letters', alternative identification for individuals without valid passports, enhancing the expediting process.
