Former UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya returns to the Octagon on Sunday in what many are calling a crucial redemption bout as he faces dangerous contender Joe Pyfer in the main event of UFC Fight Night 271 at the Climate Pledge Arena.
Adesanya (24-5-0), once the undisputed king of the middleweight division, is currently on a three-fight losing streak after defeats to Sean Strickland, Dricus du Plessis, and most recently Nassourdine Imavov via knockout in February 2025.
Now ranked No. 4 in the division, the 36-year-old Nigerian-New Zealander is under pressure to prove he still belongs among the elite.
“I think the last guy who put it on the line, regardless, called out the best, was me,” Adesanya said. “This game is slow and just stuck without me. That’s one thing people didn’t appreciate — how active I was and how much I gave to the game while I was holding the belt.”
Standing in his way is 29-year-old American prospect Joe Pyfer (15-3-0), who enters the fight ranked No. 14 and riding a three-fight win streak. Pyfer has looked impressive in recent outings, including a submission victory over Abusupiyan Magomedov and a unanimous decision win over Kelvin Gastelum.
For Pyfer, this is a golden opportunity to break into the top tier. For Adesanya, it is widely seen as a make-or-break moment in his legendary career.
The co-main event features a women’s flyweight rematch between former champion Alexa Grasso and surging contender Maycee Barber. Barber has won seven straight fights since losing to Grasso in 2021 and is now pushing for title contention.
– Israel Adesanya vs Joe Pyfer (Middleweight – Main Event)
– Alexa Grasso vs Maycee Barber (Women’s Flyweight – Co-Main)
– Michael Chiesa vs Niko Price (Welterweight)
– Julian Erosa vs Lerryan Douglas (Featherweight)
– Mansur Abdul-Malik vs Yousri Belgaroui (Middleweight)
– Terrance McKinney vs Kyle Nelson (Lightweight)
Adesanya will be looking to silence doubters and remind the world why he was once considered untouchable in the middleweight division. A loss could signal the beginning of the end of the “Stylebender” era, while a win could set up one final push toward championship glory.
