The Nollywood industry was abuzz on Sunday night following a viral moment involving Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham at the premiere of Return of Arinze, a film directed by Iyabo Ojo.
The star-studded event, held at the Balmoral Event Centre in Lagos ahead of the film’s April 3 cinema release, drew several prominent figures across the entertainment industry.
Guests in attendance included Rita Dominic, Mo Abudu, Femi Adebayo, Odunlade Adekola, Florence Ita-Giwa, Eniola Badmus, AY Makun and Shaffy Bello, among others.
However, what was intended to celebrate Ojo’s directorial debut was quickly overshadowed by a video clip that circulated widely on social media.
In the footage, Abraham, dressed in a purple gown, is seen greeting colleagues before approaching a table where Akindele was seated alongside other guests.
Abraham appeared to greet Akindele warmly, touching her arm and leaning in to speak for several seconds. Akindele, however, maintained a forward gaze and did not visibly acknowledge the greeting in the moment captured on camera.
Apparently, Toyin Abraham knelt down as always to greet Funke Akindele at The Return of Arinzo movie premiere but she ignored and kept a straight face. Why though? That’s embarrassing.

In a subsequent attempt, Abraham moved along the table to greet other guests. During this interaction, a part of her outfit reportedly brushed against Akindele’s hair, prompting the latter to adjust it without engaging Abraham.
A second attempt by Abraham to initiate a response also appeared to go unanswered.
The clip quickly gained traction online, triggering widespread debate, with opinions divided over whether the interaction reflected deliberate disregard or was simply misunderstood.
Shortly after the incident, Abraham appeared to express her displeasure in a now-deleted social media post.
Screenshots circulating online show a comment attributed to her stating, “I have unfollowed her. God forbid a bad thing. If I ever greet her again, that means….”
Checks on their socials indicated that both actresses had unfollowed each other on Instagram, further fuelling speculation about renewed tension between them.
The development has reignited long-standing discussions about a perceived rivalry between the two stars, dating back to the early 2010s in the Yoruba film sector.
Over the years, comparisons between their careers and fan-driven narratives have often amplified speculation of competition.
The rivalry notably came to the fore in 2021 during a box office clash between Akindele’s Omo Ghetto: The Saga and Abraham’s The Ghost and the Tout Too.
A similar contest played out in the 2024/2025 festive season, with Everybody Loves Jenifa and Alakada: Bad and Boujee, both drawing significant commercial attention and sparking debates over cinema performance and screening dynamics.
Despite this history, there have been moments suggesting reconciliation. In April 2024, Abraham publicly addressed the perceived rift, attributing it to industry gossip and unhealthy competition, while advocating a more positive outlook. Akindele responded amicably at the time, a gesture widely interpreted as acceptance of the peace overture.
Further optimism followed in September 2025 when both actresses were seen interacting warmly at a public event. However, intermittent reports of subtle tension and continued fan comparisons persisted into 2026.
Ironically, just days before the latest incident, Akindele had publicly defended both herself and Abraham against online body-shaming, which was viewed as a show of solidarity.
Beyond personal dynamics, both actresses remain among Nollywood’s most commercially successful figures. Akindele is widely regarded as a dominant box office force with multiple record-breaking films, while Abraham has maintained a strong performance streak with a loyal fan base.
Recent milestones include Abraham’s Oversabi Aunty, which surpassed ₦1 billion in February 2026, and Akindele’s Everybody Loves Jenifa follow-up success, alongside her December 2025 release, which reportedly grossed over ₦2 billion, reinforcing her standing as one of the industry’s highest-grossing filmmakers.
Both actresses have also been recognised by the National Film and Video Censors Board for their contributions to the growth of the Nigerian film industry.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Akindele nor Abraham has issued an official statement addressing the viral clip directly.
The incident has continued to dominate online conversations, drawing mixed reactions. While some social media users criticised Akindele’s perceived response, others argued that the situation may have been misinterpreted or that personal boundaries should be respected.
