President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday warned that growing mistrust between citizens and law enforcement could worsen insecurity, urging Nigerians to work closely with the police and other security agencies.
Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, spoke at the 2026 National Police Day Grand Parade held at Eagle Square in Abuja. The annual event, observed every April 7, honours the service and sacrifice of police officers, including those who died in the line of duty.
The President stressed that national security cannot be achieved by law enforcement alone, calling on citizens, community leaders, traditional institutions, civil society, and the private sector to actively support policing efforts.
“The safety of a nation cannot be outsourced to uniforms alone,” he said, warning that insecurity thrives when citizens and law enforcement operate in mutual suspicion.
He urged the police to remain people-oriented, respectful, and responsive, while encouraging Nigerians to see officers as partners in maintaining peace and public safety.
Tinubu also charged the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to sustain ongoing reforms and uphold professionalism, integrity, and discipline.
“Let your conduct reflect the honour of the uniform you wear and inspire public confidence,” he said, adding that strengthening policing institutions remains key to national stability.
He expressed optimism that Nigeria would overcome its security challenges through sustained reform efforts.
Also speaking, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, warned officers against indiscipline and misconduct, declaring that accountability would be enforced at all levels.
“Rank will not shield wrongdoing. There will be no sacred cows,” he said, pledging firm and fair enforcement of discipline.
Disu assured officers of improved welfare, training, and equipment, stressing that a professional police force must be supported and treated with dignity to perform effectively.
