Nigeria and Chad Forge Stronger Security Ties
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to enhancing security collaboration with neighboring Chad. This commitment comes with a pledge for intensified joint actions aimed at combating terrorism and banditry across the tumultuous Lake Chad region.
Tinubu made this announcement on Thursday during a meeting with Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Joint Press Conference Focused on Security
During a collaborative press conference, both leaders addressed the pressing regional security issues and discussed strategies to counter emerging threats in the area. Tinubu characterized this visit as opportune, highlighting its significance in reinforcing bilateral relations and fostering cooperative efforts to tackle insecurity.
Commitment to Regional Stability
Recognizing Nigeria and Chad as crucial allies within the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), Tinubu underlined their joint mission to confront terrorism and transnational challenges present in the Lake Chad Basin.
“Our discussions focused on the security hurdles our region faces. Together, we are devoted to eradicating acts of terror while ensuring the safety and sovereignty of our nations,” stated Tinubu.
The Need for Sustained Cooperation
The President emphasized the shared responsibility of both countries in securing their borders and protecting their citizens. He asserted that ongoing regional cooperation is essential for achieving lasting peace.
Building on a Strong Legacy
Reflecting on the historical ties between Nigeria and Chad, Tinubu noted the importance of building upon previous efforts to foster stability and development in the region. He asserted that enhanced security would pave the way for improved trade, economic cooperation, and social integration.
Wider Regional Collaboration
Furthermore, discussions during the meeting included broader collaboration with other neighboring countries, such as Niger.
This marks Déby’s inaugural official visit to Nigeria since President Tinubu attended his inauguration in May 2024.
