Nigeria’s preparations for their upcoming international friendlies have suffered a significant setback, with Calvin Bassey ruled out due to a back injury.
The Super Eagles defender sustained the injury during Fulham FC’s 3-1 victory over Burnley last weekend, forcing his withdrawal from the squad just two days before the team’s clash against Iran.
His withdrawal further compounds a growing injury crisis within the squad. Key players, including Victor Osimhen, Stanley Nwabali and Ola Aina have also been sidelined, leaving the technical crew with limited options as they fine-tune strategies ahead of the fixtures.
Bassey’s absence presents a major tactical challenge for head coach Eric Chelle, particularly in maintaining defensive solidity and managing quick transitions—areas where the Fulham star has become indispensable.
Despite the setbacks, there have been positive developments in camp. Captain Wilfred Ndidi has arrived at the team’s base in Antalya, Turkey, bringing the number of players in camp to 22.He is expected to participate in the team’s first training session as preparations intensify.
With no replacement expected for Bassey due to the proximity of the fixtures, the friendlies against Iran and Jordan may now serve as a testing ground for fringe players to step up and stake their claim in the national team setup.
