In a fierce rebuke, the Senegalese government has not only rejected the decision as “grossly illegal and profoundly unjust” but has also called for an “independent international investigation into suspected corruption within the CAF’s governing bodies.”
The Dramatic Match That Ignited Controversy
The genesis of this escalating dispute lies in the AFCON final played on January 18 in Rabat. During the match, a late second-half stoppage-time penalty awarded to host nation Morocco sparked outrage among Senegalese players. In a dramatic protest, several players walked off the pitch.
Though captain Sadio Mané eventually coaxed his teammates back, Morocco subsequently missed the contested penalty. Senegal then went on to secure a 1-0 victory in extra time with a decisive goal from Pape Gueye, seemingly clinching the coveted title.
CAF's Shocking Reversal and Justification
However, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) delivered a seismic blow on Tuesday, sensationally reversing Senegal's hard-won victory. Citing regulations concerning players leaving the field of play, CAF ruled in favour of Morocco following an appeal by the Moroccan side.
CAF declared that “the Senegal national team is declared to have forfeited the match,” officially recording the result as a 3-0 victory for Morocco.
Senegal's Unwavering Rejection and Call for Probe
Senegal's government spokeswoman, Marie Rose Khady Fatou Faye, minced no words in condemning the decision. “By calling into question a result achieved at the end of a match that was properly played and won in accordance with the rules of the game, the CAF seriously undermines its own credibility,” Faye stated.
“Senegal unequivocally rejects this unjustified attempt at dispossession,” she added, underscoring the gravity of the allegations by demanding a thorough, independent international investigation into potential corruption within CAF's leadership.
Dakar's Multi-Front Legal Battle
Vowing to fight this decision on all fronts, Senegal is preparing a robust legal challenge:
- Legal Avenues: The government explicitly stated its intention to “pursue all appropriate legal avenues, including before the competent international courts, to ensure that justice is served and that the primacy of sporting results is restored.”
- Suspension Request: The secretary-general of the Senegalese Football Federation has already formally requested CAF to suspend the execution of this decision and to “freeze all trophy-return procedures in Morocco” pending a final arbitration ruling.
- CAS Appeal: Furthermore, the federation has informed CAF of its “intention to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) within 48 hours,” signaling an immediate escalation of the dispute.
Solidarity Amidst Fan Detentions
Adding another layer of complexity, Faye also reiterated Senegal's “solidarity with the Senegalese citizens detained in Morocco.” This refers to 18 fans arrested during the final match and subsequently charged with “hooliganism.”
These fans faced severe penalties:
- Sentences ranging from three months to one year in jail.
- Fines up to $545.
- Accusations of violence against security forces and causing damage, following incidents where supporters reportedly attempted to storm the pitch and threw projectiles.
