Abuja Readies for APC's Landmark 2026 National Convention
Nigeria's capital, Abuja, is experiencing a flurry of activity as Eagle Square, the designated venue for the All Progressive Congress (APC) 2026 National Convention, undergoes final preparations. The highly anticipated event, scheduled to commence on Friday, March 27, and conclude on March 28, 2026, promises to be a pivotal moment for the ruling party.
Venue Transformed for Grand Political Spectacle
Eagle Square has been meticulously transformed, adorned in the vibrant signature colours of the APC: red, green, white, and blue. Party flags flutter high above, catching the breezy morning sunlight, setting a festive yet formal tone for the proceedings. Elaborate pavilions have been erected, specifically designated and clearly marked for delegates from each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, ensuring an organised and efficient polling environment.
Heightened Security and Traffic Adjustments
Security measures across the convention ground and its environs are robust. A formidable contingent of personnel from various agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other sister paramilitary organisations, are strategically deployed. All routes surrounding Eagle Square have been barricaded, with traffic diversions in effect, leading many Abuja residents to trek longer distances to their workplaces – a testament to the scale of the event.
Leadership Oversees Final Touches
The Convention Venue Committee, under the stewardship of Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, was observed conducting meticulous inspections of the ongoing preparations. Their presence underscores the party's commitment to ensuring a seamless and successful convention.
Key Figures and Delegates Converge
APC officials anticipate a massive turnout, with over 8,000 delegates expected to participate. These delegates, drawn from all 36 states and the FCT, will be led by President Bola Tinubu, 31 governors, and members of his cabinet, highlighting the event's significance within the party hierarchy.
Consensus and Unity: The Party's Guiding Principles
The APC has publicly stated its intention to adopt a consensus approach for the convention. This strategy, according to party leadership, aims to demonstrate a united and orderly front within the party ranks, fostering cohesion as it moves forward.
Minister Emphasises Democratic Values and Unity
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who also serves as the Co-Chairman of the convention’s Media and Publicity Committee, briefed the press on Thursday. He outlined the comprehensive plans, logistical arrangements, and the party's core democratic messaging leading up to the two-day event. Idris urged all committee members to collaborate effectively, emphasising the need for unity and sacrifice to ensure successful communication and execution of the convention.
Key Message from Minister Idris:
- A strong call for unity and sacrifice from all committee members.
- The importance of upholding robust internal democratic values within the APC.
- Reflection of the President's significant attributes in party conduct.
