Rail transportation took centre stage as Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, hosted the vibrant and internationally acclaimed Egbaliganza Festival, with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) playing a pivotal role in conveying dignitaries, diplomats, and guests in comfort and style.
The festival, which commenced on Friday and concluded on Saturday, March 28, 2026, was held at the historic Ake Palace of the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo III. The cultural event attracted participants from over 30 countries, further reinforcing Abeokuta’s status as a hub of rich cultural heritage and global cultural exchange.
In demonstration of its growing relevance in national development and event logistics, the NRC, under the leadership of its Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, provided strategic transport support through a specially arranged train service.
The train, fully chartered and paid for by the event organisers, conveyed guests, including foreign diplomats who were part of the delegation—from Lagos to Abeokuta, with many of them expressing satisfaction and delight at the comfort, safety, and overall travel experience offered by the rail service.
The initiative underscored the increasing importance of rail transportation in supporting major national and international events, while also enhancing tourism and connectivity across the country.
Speaking on the Corporation’s involvement, Dr. Opeifa noted that NRC’s participation aligns with the Federal Government’s objectives to promote tourism through accessible transportation, improve passenger experience, and support events of cultural and economic significance.
To ensure a memorable journey, the Corporation deployed members of the Entertainment and Touring Committee, alongside strengthened operational systems and improved station coordination, to guarantee a smooth and enjoyable travel experience for all passengers.
At the Mobolaji Johnson Train Station in Lagos, guests were warmly received by the NRC Managing Director and treated to a rich traditional Yoruba welcome, led by Princess Abiola aboard the VIP conference coach.
The colourful reception reflected the deep cultural heritage and renowned hospitality of the Egba people.
Upon arrival at the Professor Wole Soyinka Train Station in Abeokuta, the guests were welcomed with vibrant traditional drum performances, creating a culturally immersive atmosphere befitting the international stature of the festival.
The Egbaliganza Festival, organised by the Lai Labode Heritage Foundation in collaboration with the Alake of Egbaland, the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture and Tourism, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ogun State Government, is aimed at promoting arts, culture, tourism, and economic development, while positioning Nigeria prominently on the global cultural map.
Analysts have noted that the festival is expected to boost tourism, attract foreign investment, and strengthen Nigeria’s cultural diplomacy, with rail transportation playing a central role in enabling safe, efficient, and memorable travel experiences.
Following the successful hosting of the festival, dignitaries and guests commenced their return journey from Abeokuta to Lagos in an equally seamless and well-coordinated operation by the Nigerian Railway Corporation.
The return trip from Abeokuta to the Mobolaji Johnson Station (MJS), Ebute Metta, Lagos, further demonstrated the reliability, safety, and comfort of rail transport, as passengers enjoyed a smooth and timely journey back to Lagos.
Rail transportation once again proved its efficiency as the Corporation ensured proper coordination, adherence to schedule, and passenger comfort throughout the trip. The seamless movement of guests not only highlighted the operational capacity of the NRC but also reinforced confidence in rail as a dependable mode of transportation.
The successful to-and-fro movement of dignitaries during the Egbaliganza Festival further underscores the growing importance of rail in boosting tourism, enhancing connectivity, and driving national development.
From culture to connectivity, the success of Egbaliganza 2026 stands as a testament to the critical role of modern rail services in supporting major national events and delivering enhanced travel experiences across Nigeria.
