Some traders in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are facing a dire situation as power outages continue to cripple their businesses and threaten their livelihoods.
Erratic Power Supply Takes Toll on Traders
Traders operating in areas such as Karu, ACO Estate, Dei-Dei, and Dutse have reported a frustrating and embarrassing situation, with many businesses heavily dependent on electricity.
Rising Costs and Reduced Revenue
Mr Andrew Okorie, who runs a cold room in Karu, spends nearly N20,000 daily on diesel to preserve perishable goods, leading to minimal profits. Similarly, Mrs Agnes Odiase, a restaurant owner, faces a chaotic situation as customers grow uncomfortable with incessant outages.
Businesses Struggle Amidst Uncertainty
Mr Segun Ayomide, a barber in ACO Estate, has been forced to increase haircut prices to cope with rising fuel expenses, while Mr Raymond Okon, a fashion designer in Dutse, struggles to meet customer demands.
Mrs Caroline Uneru, who sells cold drinks and water in Dei-Dei, has seen her business decline due to the inability to keep goods chilled.
Causes and Government Response
The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) attributed the decline in electricity generation to persistent gas supply constraints affecting thermal power plants.
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has apologised to Nigerians and assured that supply would improve within two weeks, citing feedback from gas suppliers and ongoing pipeline repairs.
