The Jasawa Community Development Association (JCDA) has condemned Sunday night attack, which claimed lives of many people and led to the destruction of property in Anguwan Rukuba area of Jos North local government area of Plateau state.
The group, in a statement signed by its President and Secretary, Alhaji Isyaku Inuwa Dan’anacha, and Sani Suleiman, on Monday, described the incident as “disturbing, criminal, and inhuman” to innocent citizens in the community.
They commiserated with the families of the victims and called on the government to take drastic measures to ensure justice for the victims.
Eyewitnesses on Sunday said the attackers, who rode on motorcycles, invaded the community around 7:30 pm, while people were going about their normal businesses, firing bullets indiscriminately and causing panic among residents.
They said, “This senseless act of violence has led to the tragic loss of lives and left many others injured, plunging families and the wider community into grief and distress. We extend our deepest sympathies to the victims, their families, and all those affected by this heinous atrocity. Such acts are not only an affront to our shared humanity but also a direct threat to the peace and coexistence that Plateau State is known for.
“JCDA commends the Plateau State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, and the security agencies in the state for their proactive measures aimed at mitigating the situation and preventing further escalation. Their swift response and continued vigilance are critical at this difficult time.”
The group, however, condemned what it described as reprisal by some individuals who blocked the road and attacked innocent passersby.
“We strongly frown at the actions of individuals who, in reaction to this tragic incident, have resorted to taking the law into their own hands—blocking roads, attacking innocent passersby, and further endangering lives. These actions are unacceptable and only compound the tragedy. We urge such individuals to desist immediately and call on security agencies to take necessary measures to restore order and uphold the rule of law.”
“We further call on government at all level and security agencies to intensify intelligence gathering, early warning system, enhance surveillance, and deploy all necessary resources to track down and apprehend the perpetrators of this attack and any related acts of violence. Should also investigate the alleged involvement of a foreigner, seen in video at the scene of the event making inciting commentary.
“Community leaders across all divides are urged to work closely with government and security agencies to maintain vigilance within their communities. Citizens are also encouraged to remain law-abiding, stay calm, and promptly report any suspicious activities or signs of security breaches to the appropriate authorities.
“We must not allow agents of chaos to divide us or destroy the fragile peace we continue to build. We pray that Almighty God watches over Plateau State, exposes those bent on deliberately causing disharmony, fear, and terror for their evil purposes, and grants lasting peace to our land.”
