PDP's Crucial Convention Gets Green Light Amidst Factional Tensions
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set to hold its highly anticipated convention as scheduled, a decisive move by its National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC) that dismisses reported court injunctions and internal power struggles. Backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, the NCWC reaffirmed its commitment to the gathering, which is seen as a critical step in shaping the party’s trajectory towards the 2027 general elections and its broader 2026 strategic objectives.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Saturday, Hon. Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, spokesperson for the NCWC, emphasized the significance of the upcoming convention. He declared preparations complete, assuring party faithful of a credible, transparent, and inclusive process.

Despite whispers of potential court actions aimed at halting the convention, the PDP leadership maintained that no concrete legal notice had been served. Jungudo firmly stated that the convention would proceed as planned on March 29, highlighting the party’s resolve.
The NCWC also drew a sharp distinction between its sanctioned convention and a purported gathering by a rival faction, reportedly backed by Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State. Jungudo asserted:
"That gathering was not backed by law and was, in fact, restricted by a competent court. In our case, we have the full backing of the courts, the law and the members of the party."
Addressing Internal Dissent and Unity
While acknowledging internal disagreements, the PDP downplayed the extent of the split, emphasizing what it described as broad and growing support for the NCWC's direction. Jungudo likened internal dissent to differences within an extended family, stating that the NCWC currently commands the largest following within the party.
He indicated that while reconciliation remains an open avenue, the party's critical processes would not be delayed by dissent. "The party has taken a direction. Anyone who feels aggrieved and chooses not to align with us is within their constitutional rights," he added.
Regarding criticisms over the transparency of its nomination process, the NCWC spokesperson rebuffed claims of opacity, suggesting that any unawareness stemmed from a lack of proper information within the media organizations reporting it.
Wike's Influence Acknowledged
Hon. Jungudo Haruna Mohammed also took the opportunity to commend the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, for his role in providing a "conducive environment" for the convention. This acknowledgement further highlights Wike's significant influence within the NCWC faction of the party.
