Paul Onuachu and Chibuike Nwaiwu scored both goals for Trabzonspor in their 2-1 win over a Victor Osimhen-less Galatasaray in the Turkish SuperLig on Saturday.
Title-chasing Trabzonspor were at their best to defeat table-toppers at the Papara Park, ending the defending champions’ unbeaten streak against them, thanks to their Nigerian contingent.
Onuachu put the home side ahead in the fourth minute with a header into the bottom corner for 1-0, scoring his 22nd league goal of the season.
The 31-year-old lanky striker almost doubled the lead just before halftime but his sublime solo goal chalked off for offside.
Galatasaray leveled the tense encounter three minutes after the restart, but Trabzonspor regained the lead on 62 minutes with a goal made in Nigeria.
Anthony Nwakaeme delivered a free-kick onto the head of Nwaiwu, and the 23 years old central defender sent a bullet header into the top corner for 2-1.
Nwaiwu’s goal is his third in the league- all headers- since joining Trabzonspor from Austria in January.
Trabzonspor held on to claim all three points for their fifth consecutive home win, and also ended a streak of nine games without a win against Galatasaray.
The Maroon-and-Blues climb up to second on the league table with 63 points, one point behind Galatasaray who have a game in hand.
They face Alanyaspor in their next league match as they continue the search for a first league title since 2022.
