A woman who recently returned from the United Kingdom to attend a wedding in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has died in a road accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The spokesperson of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, in a statement said, the incident occurred on Monday night near the Christopher University axis of the expressway
Akinbiyi explained that the deceased was travelling in a white Toyota Camry with two other occupants when the vehicle collided with a moving truck.
According to him, the impact of the crash claimed her life, while the other passengers, a man and a woman, sustained injuries.
He said, “A fatal road traffic accident occurred at the Christopher University section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at about 17:48 hours on March 23.
“According to eyewitness accounts, the driver of the Camry drove at excessive speed and rammed into a moving truck.
“Three people were involved, including a male and two females. One female died, while the two others sustained injuries.”
Akinbiyi further disclosed that preliminary findings indicated the two female occupants had just arrived from the United Kingdom and were en route to Abeokuta for a wedding ceremony at the time of the accident.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the two female casualties were on their way from Lagos to Abeokuta, Ogun State, to attend a wedding ceremony after they had just arrived from the United Kingdom.
“The injured passengers were rushed to Famobis Hospital and Redeemed Hospital, while the deceased has been deposited at the Redeemed Hospital morgue,” he said.
Meanwhile, four persons have also been killed in a road accident at the Ijebu-Imushin axis of the Ijebu Ode-Ore expressway.
The accident which occurred on Monday night involved a white Toyota Hiace bus registered as BDJ482XC and a blue MAN Diesel truck marked RSH969XC.
It was gathered that the truck was being towed when the towing chain snapped, while the speeding Toyota bus subsequently rammed into it.
Following the collision, the driver of the towing vehicle fled the scene, leaving the truck behind.
The Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps,Ogun Sector Command, Odunsi Afolabi, confirmed the incident on Tuesday.
Afolabi blamed the crash on speeding on the part of the bus driver, adding that occupants were confirmed dead at the scene.
He said, “Regrettably, all four individuals involved in the crash comprising two male adults and two female adults sustained fatal injuries and were confirmed dead at the scene.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the crash was caused by Speed Violations (SPV).
“FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene within eight minutes of being alerted.”
He stated that the corpses were evacuated and deposited at the State Hospital Mortuary, Ijebu Ode, while the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), Imushin Division, has taken custody of the vehicles and the case for further investigation.
Reacting to the incident, the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Akinwunmi Fasakin, urged all motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits, especially during night travel, and to ensure towing equipment meets safety standards to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
