Ogun Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye Crosses Aisles, Joins Ruling APC in Historic Move
In a significant political realignment that reshapes the legislative landscape of Ogun State, Hon. Lukman Adeleye, the Minority Leader of the State House of Assembly and representative for Odogbolu State Constituency, has officially announced his defection from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the dominant All Progressives Congress (APC).
The high-profile crossover took place at his Ibefun ward within Odogbolu Local Government Area, where Adeleye was formally welcomed into the ruling party alongside a substantial number of his ardent supporters. This move follows a recent trend, making Adeleye one of six PDP lawmakers to join the APC, effectively transforming the Ogun State House of Assembly into a monolithic, one-party legislature.
A Bid for Second Term and Renewed Commitment to Service
Addressing a gathering of ward and local government APC leaders, the seasoned lawmaker not only formalized his allegiance to the new party but also openly declared his intention to seek re-election for a second term in office. Adeleye articulated his decision, emphasizing that his transition was largely influenced by the perceived strides and inclusive governance of Governor Dapo Abiodun's administration.
Highlighting his motivations, Adeleye stated:
- He expressed profound gratitude to Governor Abiodun for his unwavering commitment and leadership style, which he credited as a major factor in his decision.
- Adeleye affirmed his belief that his extensive experience gained during his initial term positions him strongly to deliver even greater benefits to his constituents.
Prioritizing People Over Position: Adeleye's Rationale
Addressing potential concerns regarding his former prominent role as Minority Leader, Adeleye unequivocally stated that genuine service to the populace far outweighs political titles or designations.
He elaborated on his philosophy:
- "It is not about position; it is about the people. What is the essence of holding a position without tangible results?" he queried, underscoring his pragmatic approach to representation.
- He asserted his track record of significant achievements for his constituents even while navigating the challenges of opposition, expressing confidence that his new alignment with the ruling party would substantially enhance his capacity to facilitate and deliver the dividends of democracy.
Projecting Unanimous Victory and Undiluted Loyalty
Looking ahead to future electoral contests, Adeleye exuded confidence, assuring party faithful of an overwhelming victory for the APC in Odogbolu. "In 2023, we won 170 out of 178 polling units in Odogbolu Local Government. This time around, APC should expect a total victory. Odogbolu has become an APC stronghold, and we will win convincingly," he declared.
Furthermore, the lawmaker reaffirmed his unshakeable loyalty to the All Progressives Congress and expressed his readiness to adhere strictly to the party's decisions regarding the mode of primary elections, whether through consensus or direct primaries. "I have submitted myself to the party. Whether it is consensus or direct primary, I am ready to abide by the party’s decision," he reiterated.
Warm Reception from APC Leadership
The defection was met with enthusiasm by local APC officials. Akogun Muyiwa Idowu, the APC Chairman in Odogbolu Local Government, voiced his satisfaction with Adeleye's entry into the ruling fold. Idowu lauded Adeleye as a responsive and people-oriented leader whose presence would undoubtedly bolster the party's strength.
Similarly, Hon. Babatunde Diya, the Chairman of Odogbolu Local Government, represented by his Vice Chairman, Hon. Princess Olushola Adeyinka, extended a warm welcome to Adeleye. Princess Adeyinka commended Adeleye's past performance and urged the constituents of Odogbolu to rally their support behind his re-election bid, anticipating continued progress under his representation within the APC framework.
