The National Union of Road Transport Workers has endorsed Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal for a second term in office, citing his administration’s achievements in infrastructure and the transport sector
The union also presented Lawal with an Award of Excellence at the Dome Pavilion, Government House, Gusau
A statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, said the NURTW delegation was led by its Board Chairman, Dr Najeem Usman Yasin, and included the National President, Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, and other senior officials
Speaking at the event, Lawal said the endorsement demonstrated the positive relationship between his administration and the transport sector
“I am deeply humbled by the two honours bestowed on me today First, I accept the Award of Excellence as a recognition of our efforts and a pledge to do more. Second, I am grateful for the endorsement for a second term from NURTW, a key grassroots group, which affirms that our policies positively impact ordinary citizens,” he said.
The governor said his administration had prioritised the development of an efficient and safe transport sector as part of efforts to improve the state’s economy
He recalled that the government distributed 50 subsidised mass transit vehicles to NURTW members to improve their livelihoods and public transportation
He also said the state government had renovated the Zamfara State Council Secretariat to provide transport workers with a better working environment
Lawal welcomed Yasin, describing his return to Zamfara as symbolic because he was the first NURTW chairman in the state after its creation in 1996
He also commended Akinsanya and the union’s national leadership for their efforts to reform and professionalise the transport industry
Earlier, Yasin said the union’s leadership had observed the governor’s achievements in his three years in office
“We are in Gusau today to appreciate your efforts by presenting you with an Award of Excellence We feel it is our duty as leaders of the union to find time to come and show the whole world what you have done,” he said.
Yasin described Lawal as “a gift to Zamfara State”, saying the governor had transformed the state within three years
“By 1st October 2026, Zamfara will be 30 years of creation Governor Lawal is surely a gift to Zamfara State. With the transformation he has achieved in three years, he has brought Zamfara to world standards,” he said.
He formally endorsed Lawal for re-election in 2027 and called on members of the union to support his bid
“I want to, on behalf of the NURTW, endorse Governor Dauda Lawal for re-election and also call on all members of the union to support and work towards his re-election in 2027 for the continuation of the good works he has started,” Yasin said
