The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) will soon announce a frontline presidential candidate from another political platform to adopt for the 2027 presidential election, according to its founder, Dr Boniface Aniebonam.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, Aniebonam explained that prolonged litigation over the party’s national leadership left the platform with insufficient time to process a standard-bearer capable of matching major contenders
He noted that following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) recognition of the NNPP leadership led by Dr Agbo Major as National Chairman, the party utilized a placeholder candidate while actively shopping for a presidential contender with character and capacity.
“The NNPP is firm with its manifesto and requirements for a presidential candidate We made a mistake with Kwankwaso in 2023 and do not want to repeat it,” Aniebonam stated. “The NNPP is not desperate to rule Nigeria at all cost. We believe that God has the final say and that the Almighty decides who can lead a nation, hence our stance on politics not being a do-or-die affair.”
Aniebonam revealed that national leadership will convene shortly to finalize the adoption strategy before making a formal public declaration
He stressed that party members, alongside key stakeholders in the maritime, shipping, transport, and logistics sectors, will contribute to deciding which candidate receives the party’s endorsement
Clarifying the party’s broader strategy for the upcoming election cycle, the founder affirmed that the NNPP will focus its direct electoral contests on legislative and state executive positions
“For now, the only position we will no longer be contesting for is the presidency By 2031, we will have a presidential candidate to compete favourably with other political parties,” Aniebonam added. (NAN)
