Gombe State Government urged Media Trust Group to sustain its commitment to credible journalism and public enlightenment, saying Nigerians increasingly depend on the media for reliable information amid declining trust in society
The deputy governor, Dr Manassah Jatau, who represented Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya at the launch, said Nigerians needed credible media organisations to help them distinguish facts from misinformation, noting that the erosion of trust had made it difficult for citizens to determine what information to believe
“I sincerely also stand on your trust Please continue this trust. I am sorry to say that Nigeria is in an era where trust between the leaders and the led is facing challenges. So, unless we stand on your trust, we don’t know what to believe,” he said.
He urged the Media Trust Group to use its platforms to educate the public and provide reliable reference materials
He also called on Media Trust Group to expand its agricultural coverage and invest in research-based reporting that would help farmers make informed decisions
Jatau said farmers in northern Nigeria needed more information on suitable crops for different soil types and the effects of climate change on agricultural production
“Our northern farmers are really farming ignorantly They don’t know which crop to plant on which soil. Now, with climate change, they don’t know which plant to grow,” he said.
The deputy governor said the Gombe State Government would support Media Trust Group in achieving its objectives and ensuring the success of the new newsroom
