The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has sparked considerable discussion by suggesting that Nigerians may eventually champion a constitutional amendment to permit President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to serve beyond the current two-term limit.
The traditional ruler made the provocative remark in a congratulatory message celebrating President Tinubu's 74th birthday, describing him as a resolute leader whose policies are beginning to yield tangible results across the nation. The statement was formally released by Oba Akanbi's spokesperson, Ibrahim Alli.
Monarch Praises "Decisive Leadership"
"Many Nigerians may call for a constitutional review to enable Tinubu to serve more than two terms in office. He is a leader who knows what he is doing," Oba Akanbi stated, emphasizing his belief in the President's vision and capacity.
Oba Akanbi lauded the Tinubu administration for its bold implementation of reforms aimed at tackling Nigeria's entrenched economic challenges. He asserted that these measures have already commenced stabilizing critical economic indicators. The monarch specifically highlighted several policy achievements he believes are contributing to national improvement:
- Exchange rate unification initiatives.
- Reported increase in domestic oil production.
- Rising inflows of foreign direct investment.
- A significant surge in Nigeria’s foreign reserves, which he claimed increased from approximately $1 billion to between $49.5 billion and $50.45 billion as of late February and March 2026.
Governance Reforms and Infrastructure Development Lauded
Beyond economic policies, the Oluwo of Iwo also commended the President's commitment to broader governance reforms. He pointed to the administration's stance on issues such as local government autonomy, which he believes has strengthened grassroots administration and led to improved financial allocations to states.
Furthermore, Oba Akanbi praised ongoing flagship infrastructure projects crucial for national development, specifically mentioning:
- The ambitious Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project.
- The extensive Sokoto-Badagry Road initiative.
The Importance of Firm Decision-Making
In his message, Oba Akanbi underscored the critical importance of decisive leadership. "You are not yet a capable leader until you take decisions and stand by them," he declared, subtly contrasting President Tinubu's approach with that of previous leaders.
He added that while past administrations might have wavered under public pressure, President Tinubu has demonstrated unwavering resolve in executing challenging policies. Oba Akanbi expressed profound optimism that the next phase of the administration would usher in even greater economic stability and significantly enhance the living standards of Nigerians.
