UK and Nigeria Ink Deal to Tackle Illegal Migration
The UK and Nigeria have reached a landmark agreement to address illegal migration. Under this deal, Nigeria will recognise UK letters, allowing for a smoother deportation process.
The agreement was finalised during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's historic state visit to the UK, the first by a west African leader in 37 years.
Border Security and Asylum Minister Alex Norris emphasized the partnership's importance in ensuring that those without the right to be in the UK are swiftly removed.
Nigeria's Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, expressed the country's commitment to responsible migration practices, viewing this partnership as a template for future bilateral understandings.
The agreement also includes joint operations to crack down on criminal gangs abusing visa routes and sharing information to ensure genuine arrivals.
In a move to prevent fraudulent applications, a new standardized document-checking system will be implemented. Nigeria will also review its laws to tackle immigration crime, ensuring stricter penalties for offenders.
Notably, this deal comes after the UK's previous arrangement with Rwanda collapsed. The UK hopes this new partnership with Nigeria will effectively address illegal migration and strengthen bilateral ties.
