By Umeh JulietThe Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has been ranked among the Federal Government’s top three performing agencies in the 2026 Public Service Reforms Performance Assessment conducted by the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR).
The Commission secured third position, behind the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), following a comprehensive evaluation of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) based on key reform indicators, including the Self-Assessment Tool, Freedom of Information (FOI) compliance, Fiscal Transparency and Integrity Index, and official website performance.
The annual assessment recognises MDAs that have demonstrated excellence in implementing public service reforms, promoting transparency, accountability and improved service delivery.
Receiving the award on behalf of the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Commissioner, Technical Services, Engr. Abraham Oshadami, described the recognition as an affirmation of the Commission’s commitment to institutional reforms.
“On behalf of the Board, Management and staff of the Nigerian Communications Commission, we thank the Bureau for these recognitions. For us at the NCC, this award acknowledges our ongoing reform efforts and underscores the need to sustain them,” Oshadami said.
He noted that the recognition would further inspire the Commission to deepen reforms aimed at improving service delivery and strengthening public confidence in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
“This recognition serves as a motivation to strengthen our commitment to service delivery. It also confirms that our reforms to improve transparency and accountability are gaining public acceptance and recognition,” he added.
Speaking on the benefits to consumers, Oshadami said the award reflects the Commission’s efforts to enhance service quality, transparency and responsiveness across the telecommunications industry.
“For telecommunications consumers, this recognition reflects our continued commitment to improving service quality, transparency and responsiveness. It reinforces the importance of maintaining standards that support better customer experience and greater confidence in telecom services nationwide,” he said.
He reaffirmed the Commission’s resolve to deploy effective regulatory measures and innovative approaches to strengthen consumer protection and improve quality of service across the sector.
Over the past two years, the NCC has introduced several reforms to enhance transparency and accountability. These include the launch of the National Coverage Map, which provides near real-time information on network availability and performance nationwide, and the publication of Quarterly Network Performance Reports detailing operators’ service delivery.
The Commission has also directed mobile network operators to simplify tariff communication for consumers and enforced compliance with updated Corporate Governance Guidelines to strengthen accountability and operational efficiency.
In addition, the NCC has expanded the proactive publication of industry data to keep stakeholders and the public better informed about developments in the telecommunications sector.
Speaking at the award ceremony, the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms, Mr. Dasuki Arabi, commended participating MDAs, particularly the top-performing agencies, for their commitment to transparency, accountability and open governance.
He said the annual assessment, held as part of activities marking the United Nations Public Service Day, provides a platform to recognise institutions that have excelled in implementing reforms and delivering quality public services.
Besides the institutional awards, 20 outstanding public servants across the federal, state and local government levels were honoured for excellence and leadership. Among the recipients were the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, Mrs. Adejoke Adefulire.
