Nigerian singer Chike has opened up on the relationship guidance he received from his mother, revealing that she warned him against marrying an unemployed partner or someone with heavy financial responsibilities.
Speaking recently during an interview on the Ada’s Room podcast, the 33-year-old said his mother emphasised the importance of choosing a partner who adds value beyond emotional attachment.
“I think everybody should look for a partner that has value. Personally, my mum advised me never to settle down with a woman who doesn’t have a source of livelihood regardless of love,” he said.
Chike explained that such circumstances could translate into long-term strain in marriage, particularly if one partner is expected to shoulder extended family obligations without support.
The singer noted that he has taken the advice seriously, saying it now influences how he approaches relationships, including asking potential partners questions about their lifestyle, productivity, and responsibilities.
He further encouraged men to look beyond physical attraction when choosing a life partner, stressing the importance of financial stability, personal growth, and shared values in building a lasting relationship.
He added that her advice also extended to family background and financial pressure, noting that marrying into certain situations could become burdensome over time.
“She also told me never to marry someone with the baggage of family responsibilities, especially a firstborn that is not productive,” Chike stated.
