Fulani leaders in Plateau State have directed cattle owners and herders to suspend the transportation of cattle to the Kara Bukuru Livestock Market in Jos South Local Government Area of the state following recent attacks that left several people dead and injured The directive, issued by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), is effective from October 6 to October 20, 2026. The suspension followed reports of attacks on herders and vehicles conveying cattle to and from the market. On Sunday, gunmen reportedly opened fire on herders returning to Bassa from the cattle market, killing two people and injuring eight others.
The incident came about two weeks after another attack on September 20, when gunmen reportedly attacked herders in Kassa community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, killing five people and injuring another. Worried by the recurring attacks, Fulani leaders in the state, including local government chairmen, Ardos and cattle owners, met in Jos on Monday to deliberate on the development. At the meeting, the leaders condemned what they described as targeted and incessant attacks on members of the community.
” “The meeting unanimously resolved that, as a mark of mourning for those who lost their lives and in the interest of preserving lives, all Fulani cattle owners and herders are directed to suspend the movement of cattle to the Kara Bukuru Livestock Market from 6 October 2026 to 20 October 2026. All members are urged to comply fully with this resolution,” the communique stated. The leaders said the temporary suspension would provide security agencies and other stakeholders with an opportunity to strengthen security measures, identify those responsible for the attacks and put preventive measures in place.
They also called on security agencies to conduct thorough investigations into the two attacks, arrest and prosecute those responsible and guarantee the safety of all citizens irrespective of their ethnic backgrounds. “The Fulani community reaffirmed its commitment to peace, lawfulness, and cooperation with all security agencies and appealed to all members to remain calm, exercise restraint, and avoid taking the law into their own hands,” the leaders said.
