Malaria Eradication Efforts in Kebbi State
In a significant move to combat malaria, the Kebbi State Government is preparing to distribute an impressive 3.1 million insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) to households across the region.
Government's Commitment to Public Health
The Health Commissioner, Alhaji Yakubu Samaila Augie, represented by Usman Magaji, Director of Public Health, announced this initiative at a dedicated media briefing. Magaji emphasized the government's dedication to eradicating malaria, highlighting the proven effectiveness of ITNs in preventing mosquito bites and reducing disease transmission.
He encouraged residents to utilize the nets to safeguard their families, underscoring the importance of individual action in public health initiatives.
Media's Role in Malaria Elimination
Nasir Umar Zagga, the State Malaria Elimination Programme Manager, appealed to media professionals to actively support the campaign. He stressed the need for consistent media coverage, documentaries, and public awareness campaigns to educate and engage the community.
Zagga believes that media involvement is crucial to achieving the ambitious goal of a malaria-free Kebbi State.
Collaborative Campaign for Health
The campaign, as explained by GHSC-PSM Campaign Manager, Mrs. Patience Ochibe, is a joint effort between the Kebbi State Government, the United States Government, and the Against Malaria Foundation (AMF). This collaboration aims to ensure a comprehensive and effective distribution process.
With the previous ITN distribution in 2022, the current campaign is timely, and over 12,000 personnel are ready to manage distribution at more than 1,200 centers. The campaign will officially commence on April 11, 2026, with household distribution taking place from April 12 to 16, 2026.
Mrs. Ochibe encouraged households to actively participate in the enumeration process to facilitate a seamless distribution.
The briefing also featured representatives from CTAT and other organizations, followed by a Q&A session addressing campaign-related queries.
This initiative holds the promise of substantially reducing malaria transmission, bringing Kebbi State closer to the national goal of malaria elimination.
