Kebbi PDP Backs Wike Faction, Delegates Confirmed for Abuja Convention
In a significant political maneuver, the Kebbi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially declared its intention to fully participate in the forthcoming national convention spearheaded by the faction aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The announcement, made over the weekend in Birnin Kebbi by the party's State Secretary, Abubakar Kalgo, underscores a strategic alignment within the deeply fractured opposition party.
Unanimous Decision for National Engagement
Kalgo revealed that the crucial decision to support the Wike faction and send delegates to the convention was reached after a unanimous agreement among key party stakeholders in Kebbi State. All delegates from Kebbi are poised for full participation in the exercise, scheduled from Sunday to Monday in Abuja.
According to Kalgo, this move is a clear demonstration of the Kebbi PDP’s commitment to remain actively involved in national party affairs, especially in light of recent internal disagreements that have destabilized the party.
Addressing Past Divisions and Seeking Cohesion
This latest development follows months of internal strife within the state chapter, notably their rejection of Kabiru Tanimu’s emergence as National Chairman. Tanimu's leadership claim stemmed from a convention held in Ibadan last November, which the Kebbi PDP openly opposed despite Tanimu being an indigene of the state.
The party cited several reasons for its opposition to Tanimu:
- His non-participation in party activities within Kebbi State.
- His failure to adequately consult key stakeholders before declaring his interest in the national championship position.
Kalgo expressed satisfaction with the preparations for the Abuja convention, stating, “We are satisfied with the arrangements for the Abuja convention, and all our delegates are prepared to participate fully.” He further emphasized that the Abuja convention offers a vital opportunity for party members to bolster internal cohesion and strategically reposition the PDP for future political engagements.
