Governor Orders Immediate Investigation into Hospital Tragedy
Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has taken swift action following the tragic deaths of two children at General Hospital, Zuru, by approving the formation of a special investigative committee. The announcement was made in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Yakubu Bala Tafida, and released to journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday.
Committee Composition and Mandate
The committee, tasked with uncovering the truth behind the incident, is led by the Commissioner for Information, Yakubu Ahmed BK, as Chairman. Other members include the Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Sama’ila Augie, and the Hon. Commissioner for Establishment, Alhaji Manu Dogondaji. Dr. Zaki Abubakar Zaki, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, will serve as Secretary.
Key Objectives of the Probe
- Investigate the remote and immediate causes of the children’s deaths, who were siblings from the same father.
- Identify individuals directly or indirectly involved in the incident, particularly in light of allegations that the children may have received a wrongful injection.
- Apportion blame where necessary and recommend measures to prevent future occurrences.
Tight Deadline and Urgent Action
The committee has been given a one-week deadline to submit its findings and has been directed to commence work immediately. The urgency underscores the gravity of the situation and the state government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
Public Outrage and Hospital Tensions
The incident has plunged the children’s parents into mourning and sparked tensions within the hospital community. Reports suggest that nurses may have defied doctors’ instructions, further fueling concerns about medical protocols and patient safety.
Call for Justice and Preventive Measures
As the investigation unfolds, stakeholders are calling for justice for the affected family and systemic reforms to ensure such tragedies do not recur. The committee’s findings are expected to provide clarity and pave the way for improved healthcare standards in Kebbi State.
