Commuters along Gandun Albasa street in Kano have been encountering a heartbreaking sight of Salisu Sani, an 18-year-old boy, standing under the scorching sun from morning till night, begging for help. Sani hails from Yalwa town in Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State and has been battling the illness for years.
The disease, which doctors suspect to be Noma, has caused a tumor to grow near his cheek and jaw, presenting as a large lump on one side of his face and distorting his facial symmetry. Sani, who is the eldest of six children, now positions himself daily in front of the residence of late Alhaji Bashir Tofa, hoping to attract public sympathy.
Sani explained that he has been battling the disease since he was small, and it has kept growing over the years. He said, "Every night it pains me so much, I can’t sleep. Because of this disease, I can’t go to school. It has crippled all my ambitions." He underwent the first surgery at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), but doctors warned that a second operation was necessary to save his eyesight.
Despite visiting hospitals in Kano and Sokoto, as well as traditional medicine sellers, Salisu’s condition continues to worsen. He says his biggest wish is simply to get the tumor out of his face. Sani appealed to the government, NGOs, and philanthropists to help him with the surgery sponsorship, saying, "They told me I risk losing my eye if the surgery is not done. But my parents cannot afford it. We spent a huge sum of money during the first surgery and had to solicit support from people. Now I stand here every day to beg."
Why This Matters
The case of Salisu Sani highlights the need for access to quality healthcare and the importance of philanthropic support for individuals battling debilitating diseases. It is imperative that governments, NGOs, and individuals come together to provide the necessary assistance to those in need, ensuring that they receive the medical attention they require to lead a healthy and dignified life.
