The Kano State House of Assembly has confirmed receiving a letter from Governor Abba Yusuf requesting the screening of the deputy governor nominee, Murtala Garo.
The Speaker of the House, Jibrin Falgore, announced this after reading the request letter of the governor on Wednesday at plenary.
Governor Yusuf nominated Garo as deputy governor following the resignation of Aminu Gwarzo last month.
According to the letter, the governor highlighted the good character of the nominee, his vast experience, exposure, and the support he has given to the APC and the development of Kano in several capacities.
The nomination is in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the governor to nominate a deputy governor where a vacancy exists.
Following the reading of the letter, the Speaker announced the constitution of an ad hoc committee to screen the nominee.
The committee, chaired by the deputy speaker, comprises the majority leader, chief whip, deputy majority leader, majority whip, and members representing Fagge, Sumaila, Warawa, Dawakin Kudu, and Tudun Wada constituencies, among others.
The committee is expected to invite the nominee for screening and report back to the House on Monday.
According to a statement signed by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, earlier on Wednesday, the 48-year-old nominee is a seasoned political administrator with over two decades of service in both elective and appointed positions.
