A newborn stolen from a house in Sabon Gari New Extension, Kaduna South Local Government Area of Kaduna State, has been recovered in Unguwar Ma’azu area
The baby’s mother, Amina, said she was alerted on Monday evening that a woman in the area was claiming to have given birth, but residents became suspicious after the baby was seen crying and the woman could not breastfeed him
She said her elder sister’s daughter rushed to her house around Maghrib prayer and asked her to go and identify the baby
“When we got to the house, I entered the compound thinking that we were going there to congratulate the woman on her delivery As soon as I entered, I saw the woman before I saw the baby, and I immediately recognised her as the same woman who came to my house and took my baby,” Amina said.
According to her, residents restrained her from confronting the woman while the police were contacted
“We went to the police station, where my baby was handed back to me I am grateful and I thank everyone who prayed for me and helped in finding my baby,” she said.
A resident, Malam Garba, who helped in locating the baby, said residents initially believed the woman had delivered three days earlier
He said the woman first claimed that her baby was in hospital before later saying the baby had died
“But when she was seen with a newborn baby, people became suspicious,” he said
He added that was why they looked for the woman whose baby had been reported stolen and asked her to come and check whether the baby was hers
The incident occurred on Sunday when the suspect allegedly visited the family’s home and introduced herself as a distant relative of the baby’s father
The Kaduna State Police Command spokesman, DSP Mansir Hassan, confirmed the recovery of the baby, saying the suspect was undergoing interrogation as investigation continued
