Members of Kaduna Polo Club have unanimously re-elected Mohammad Babangida as President, reaffirming their commitment to restoring the club’s status as the leading polo hub in northern Nigeria.
The decision was reached at the club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on Friday, March 28, 2026, at the Club House in Murtala Square, Kaduna.
The meeting, presided over by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Col. A.D. Umar (rtd.), was widely described as one of the most peaceful and successful gatherings in the club’s five-decade history.
In his acceptance speech, Babangida described his re-election as a significant responsibility, pledging to build on the club’s legacy and elevate its profile. He expressed confidence that with the support of sponsors, traditional institutions and club members, Kaduna Polo Club would achieve greater milestones.
Babangida, who joined the club’s management committee in 2008 as Tournament Manager, also commended members, staff and stakeholders for their continued dedication to the growth of polo. He reiterated his commitment to strengthening the club’s reputation as a major sporting and tourism attraction in Nigeria.
The AGM also retained Brigadier General Kapeh Kazir as First Vice President and Mohammed Baba Askira as Second Vice President. Other key positions saw Atiku Abubakar Saleh re-elected as Tournament Manager, Bello Buba as Polo Captain and Ahmed Sodangi as Treasurer.
Additional appointments into the Executive Management Committee include Abubakar Sadiq Mohammed as House Member, Nasiru Yusuf as Ground Member and Tijjani Sani, popularly known as “One Minute,” as Bar Member.
Speaking after the elections, Gen. Kapeh congratulated both returning and newly elected officials, praising members for their orderly conduct during the AGM and the 2026 Ramadan Polo Tournament. He assured that the committee would intensify efforts to successfully host upcoming events, particularly the prestigious 2026 Kaduna International Polo Tournament.
Renowned for its glamour and competitive edge, the Kaduna tournament attracts top polo players from Nigeria and across Europe, America and Africa. A major highlight of the event remains the coveted Georgian Cup, with El-Amin Polo Team returning as defending champions, having secured the historic title a record 17 times.
