Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has broken his silence on Rúben Amorim’s turbulent tenure at the club, admitting that things simply “didn’t click” despite his belief in the Portuguese coach’s future success.
In an interview with The Guardian, Maguire refused to criticise Amorim, describing him as a talented manager who will go on to have an outstanding career elsewhere.
“I have nothing bad to say about him. I do believe he’ll go on and have an amazing career, and at his next club he’ll probably go and win many, many football matches.” Maguire said
The England defender, however, acknowledged that Amorim’s time at Old Trafford did not work out as hoped.
“It just didn’t click or work and us, as players, have got to take a lot of responsibility for that as well,” Maguire added.
Maguire’s comments come after a difficult period for United under Amorim, during which the team struggled for consistency in both the Premier League and domestic cup competitions. The Portuguese coach’s tactical approach and high demands reportedly failed to yield the desired results, leading to growing speculation about his future at the club.
Rúben Amorim was appointed as Manchester United manager in November 2024 with high expectations, having previously led Sporting CP to domestic success. However, adapting to the Premier League and managing a squad in transition proved more difficult than anticipated.
Amorim parted ways with Manchester United in January of 2026.
