The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kebbi State on Wednesday said only the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party are eligible to contest in the state Assembly by-election fixed for 20th of June, this year in Zuru Local Government Area of the state.
Resident Electoral Commissioner for Kebbi State, Abubakar Sarkin Pawa Dambo while briefing stakeholders on the preparedness of INEC, said it outlined 22nd-26th May for political parties to nominate candidates for the elections as required by Section 84 of the Electoral Act, 2026 but at the expiration of the deadline, only the APC and the LP met INEC requirements for submission of candidates.
He said “Consequently, only the two parties will participate in the by-elections, while they are required to submit the names of their Polling Agents latest by the 10th, June 2026”
He said “Campaigning begins the same day and terminates on the 18th, June 2026, while elections will take place on the 20th”..
He stated that the old Voters’ Register would be used for the polls, appealing to voters and other stakeholders to give maximum cooperation to INEC for the smooth conduct of the elections
Dambo said the election would be held in 10 wards, six of which are in Zuru metropolis and 200 poling units.
“109,292 registered voters would participate in the election and we have trained 822 adhoc staff for a hitch free bye election on 20th of June in Zuru”, he said.
The seat became vacant following the death of the late member, Usman Muhammad Zuru., who was the speaker of the state assembly early this year.
