INEC's Electoral Guidelines Meeting
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) brought together political party leaders in Abuja to discuss the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Key figures in attendance included Senator Nenadi Usman from the Labour Party and representatives from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu.
New Electoral Guidelines
The meeting's primary focus was the presentation and discussion of newly drafted electoral guidelines, a response to the Electoral Act 2026.
INEC's Chairman emphasized the need for updated regulations, ensuring alignment with the new electoral law and a more robust framework for the upcoming polls.
Preparatory Measures
INEC outlined several preparatory steps, including the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which will commence with online pre-registration on August 18, 2025, and in-person registration a week later.
Additionally, a nationwide voter register revalidation drive will be conducted to ensure the integrity of the electoral roll by removing duplicate entries and records of deceased individuals.
Electoral Reforms and Political Activities
The meeting comes amid ongoing debates about electoral reforms, particularly concerning the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 and the Senate's stance on electronic transmission of results.
Meanwhile, political parties are gearing up for the elections. President Bola Tinubu has secured the All Progressives Congress (APC) backing for a second term, while opposition leaders like Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Peter Obi explore a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) banner.
