Nigerian singer Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, popularly known as Spyro, has revealed that he abandoned church attendance after university before finding his way back through Harvesters International Christian Centre.
The artist made the disclosure during the birthday celebration of Pastor Bolaji Idowu, where he shared personal reflections on his spiritual journey and the impact of the church on his life.
“After university, I actually lost interest in attending church. I just felt it wasn’t for me anymore,” Spyro said. “But one message changed everything about my life.”
According to him, his return to faith was largely influenced by Idowu’s approach to ministry, which he described as relatable and non-judgmental. He credited the pastor with helping him develop a deeper understanding of God and strengthening his spiritual life.
“I want to say a big thank you to Pastor B, because now I know God better,” he said, adding that many people express surprise at his knowledge of scripture and ability to teach the Word.
Spyro noted that Idowu’s style of leadership differs from traditional methods that rely on fear or condemnation. Instead, he said, the pastor focuses on acceptance and gradual transformation.
“He’s not judgmental. He won’t pressure you or condemn you. He welcomes you and shares the gospel in such a subtle way that you don’t even realise when transformation begins,” he said.
The singer also defended the church against critics, stating that those who question its approach may not fully understand its model. “It’s a place where you’re accepted first, and then guided,” he added.
Beyond the pulpit, Spyro highlighted Idowu’s personal engagement with members, noting that the pastor maintains close contact and shows genuine interest in their wellbeing.
“He calls to check on you and wants to know how your life is going,” he said.
Spyro expressed appreciation and celebrated the cleric, describing him as a significant influence in his life.
