Ghana has sacked head coach of the men’s national team Otto Addo, with immediate effect.
In a statement released by the Ghana Football Association, the country’s football governing body did not state a reason for Addo’s sack.
Addo leaves the post two years into his second stint as Ghana’s head coach, following his appointment in March 2024.
The Black Stars’ preparation for the 2026 World Cup has looked bleak in recent months, with four consecutive losses, including a cumulative 3-0 loss to Japan and South Korea in the first two friendly matches.
The most recent defeats included a 5-1 loss to Austria last week, and Monday’s 2-1 loss to Germany, leading to the GFA’s removal of Addo.
“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the Head Coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo effective immediately.”
“The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours.”
The GFA, however, stated that Addo’s replacement will be announced in due course, as the West African nation seeks a new direction ahead of the World Cup to be held in US, Mexico, and Canada.
Ghana, ranked 72nd in the world, have been drawn in Group L at the 2026 World Cup, where they will face England, Croatia, and Panama.
The Black Stars will be participating in their fifth tournament, and a quarter-final appearance at South Africa 2010 is their best record.
