Oyo State Launches Transportation Relief for Workforce
In a proactive move to mitigate the impact of the current economic climate, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved a monthly transportation support allowance for civil servants. The Governor made the announcement on Monday during his supervision of the YEAP-SAFER support disbursement and stakeholder engagement programme at the Fashola Agribusiness Hub in Oyo town.
The initiative is designed to provide immediate relief to the state’s workforce, ensuring that the rising costs of living do not compromise the efficiency of public service delivery. Governor Makinde emphasized that the welfare of workers remains a top priority for his administration during these challenging times.
Key Details of the Support Scheme
- Monthly Stipend: Civil servants will receive a N10,000 transport allowance.
- Duration: The support package is scheduled for an initial period of three months.
- Commencement: Payments are set to take effect starting from March.
- Official Guidelines: The state government will communicate specific disbursement instructions through formal channels in the coming days.
Context of the Energy Crisis
The Governor identified the ongoing energy crisis and the resulting spike in transportation costs as the primary drivers behind this intervention. He noted that the sharp increase in fuel prices has significantly affected the welfare and overall productivity of workers across various ministries, departments, and agencies.
According to reports, international geopolitical tensions—including hostilities involving Israel, the USA, and Iran—have contributed to a volatile global petroleum market. In Nigeria, this has translated to a dramatic rise in the pump price of petrol, which surged from N860 per litre to between N1,320 and N1,500 at many filling stations. This escalation has triggered a ripple effect, leading to higher transport fares and increased costs for essential food items.
Sustaining Service Delivery
Governor Makinde reiterated that the transport allowance is a strategic response aimed at easing financial strain while maintaining the momentum of government operations. By supporting the mobility of civil servants, the state aims to ensure that essential public services continue to function optimally despite the prevailing economic pressures.
