A final-year student of the Department of Physics, Federal University Dutse (FUD), Daha Muhammad Albakari, has developed an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered fire detection and prevention system
The system, called AI FIRE SYSTEM, combines computer vision, embedded AI, Internet of Things (IoT) and environmental sensors to detect fire quickly and accurately
According to Albakari, unlike conventional fire alarms that rely mainly on smoke or heat sensors, the system continuously analyses visual and environmental data in real time to detect potential fire hazards at an early stage
He said traditional systems could generate false alarms from cooking smoke, steam or dust and often provide limited information to help users assess the level of danger
“AI FIRE SYSTEM represents a significant advancement over traditional fire alarms,” he said, adding that the system could reduce false alarms and enable faster responses during emergencies
Albakari said he developed the system in response to the need for an affordable, intelligent and locally developed solution capable of detecting fire hazards before they escalate into major disasters
He explained that the system uses an ESP32-CAM to capture real-time images, while environmental sensors monitor temperature and gas concentration
An embedded AI model analyses the data to classify conditions as fire, smoke or normal and determines the level of risk
Once a potential hazard is detected, he said, the system activates local alarms and can send alerts through Wi-Fi or GSM connectivity
Albakari said the system could be deployed in homes, schools, hospitals, offices, markets, hotels, warehouses, factories, filling stations and other high-risk locations
He said the use of affordable hardware and locally developed AI technology could make intelligent fire safety more accessible in Nigeria
The university said the innovation aligns with the Vice-Chancellor’s 11-point agenda and demonstrates its commitment to promoting research and innovation among staff and students
It added that the invention would enhance FUD’s visibility and strengthen its position in academic excellence and innovative research
