NYC Health Department Confirms First Severe Mpox Case
The NYC Health Department has issued an advisory, confirming the first case of severe mpox (formerly monkeypox) in the city. A resident has tested positive for mpox clade I, a more severe strain of the virus.
Understanding Mpox Clades
Dr. Marc Siegel, Fox News senior medical analyst, explains that clade I causes more severe symptoms and can be life-threatening. It spreads through direct contact, sexual activity, kissing, and close respiratory droplets.
Clade II, which caused the 2022 global outbreak, has a survival rate of over 99.9%. In contrast, clade I, responsible for the 2024 DRC and African outbreak, is known to cause more severe symptoms and deaths.
Travel-Related Case, No Local Transmission
The New York City patient recently traveled internationally, and there is no known local transmission of mpox clade I. NYC Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin assures that the risk remains low for local residents.
Vaccination Recommendations
The NYC Health Department recommends vaccination for those at risk, including men who are gay, bisexual, or have sex with men, aged 18 and older, and those traveling to areas with clade I mpox spread. Vaccination is also advised for those who may have been in close contact with an infected person within 14 days.
Who is at Risk and How to Prevent Mpox
Immunocompromised individuals and young children are at the highest risk of severe mpox symptoms. Vaccination can reduce the chances of infection and lessen symptom severity. The two-dose JYNNEOS vaccine is the primary protection measure.
Mpox Symptoms and Treatment
Mpox symptoms include a painful rash on various body parts, fever, chills, exhaustion, muscle aches, headache, swollen lymph nodes, and respiratory issues. In rare cases, it can lead to eye infections, severe rash, painful skin lesions, and neurological problems.
Treatment involves supportive care to manage symptoms. In severe cases, patients may receive TPOXX (tecovirimat), a medication used for smallpox-related infections, including mpox.
