Federal Government Honors Senator Mpigi Barry with Highway Rerouting
The federal government has officially sanctioned the rerouting of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to traverse Ogoniland, paying tribute to the late Senator Mpigi Barinada Barry.
During a poignant Night of Tribute held in Abuja yesterday, Minister Umahi expressed deep sorrow over Senator Mpigi’s passing, describing it as an immense loss for the nation. He emphasized the senator's unwavering dedication to national development, integrity, and his role as a bridge-builder within the Senate.
Senator Mpigi’s influence, as Umahi pointed out, reached far beyond his home constituency, with numerous impactful projects initiated across various states including Lagos, Ogun, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Kano.
Umahi portrayed the late lawmaker, who served the Rivers South-East Senatorial District, as a man of “impeccable integrity,” highlighting his steadfastness and reliability—a rarity in the political landscape.
The minister noted Senator Mpigi’s pivotal contributions in tackling challenges associated with major road projects, notably the Bodo-Bonny Road and the Eleme-Onne section of the East-West Road in Rivers State.
In a gesture of recognition for Senator Mpigi’s dedicated service, President Bola Tinubu has approved the rerouting of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to ensure it passes through Ogoniland.
Umahi extended the Federal Government’s support to Senator Mpigi’s grieving family, reaffirming a commitment to continue his vision for development.
