Oyo Governor Declares Independence from Federal Influence in Future Elections
IBADAN— In a decisive statement, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State proclaimed that the power of the federal government will not sway the decisions of voters in the 2027 general elections. Speaking at the Oyo State Tourism Summit hosted at the University of Ibadan International Conference Centre, the governor expressed a strong belief in the electorate's ability to choose their leaders without external pressures.
Makinde emphasized, "I believe that this election cycle, federal might will not work. It has worked in Ekiti state in both instances but this time around, Nigerians will show politicians pepper! They will demonstrate that they do not wish to remain bystanders; they intend to actively participate, and I am confident in what I am saying." This affirmation underlines a growing sentiment among Nigerians who are eager to assert their democratic rights and preferences.
Reflecting on the governance in Oyo following his administration, Makinde addressed concerns about succession planning. He revealed that his administration has laid down frameworks meant to ensure continuity in governance. While he indicated that he would recommend a successor, he clarified that the ultimate decision rests with the people of Oyo. "I will recommend for Oyo State people, but the decision will rest with the people of Oyo State," he stated firmly.
The governor also warned about the significant repercussions of electing leaders lacking the necessary capabilities to serve effectively. He cautioned, "If you make a mistake and bring someone who will not do good work, it is a one-day event, but the impact will last four years. Therefore, we must get it right. Leadership changes, but systems endure. Our focus has been deliberate."
There have been rumors suggesting that Makinde may endorse a former Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Bimbo Adekanbi, as his preferred candidate for governor. On Wednesday, Oyo House of Assembly Speaker Mr. Adebo Ogundoyin confirmed meeting with Adekanbi, mentioning him as the consensus gubernatorial candidate from their party, the State Allied Peoples Movement.
In response to speculation about his mentorship over the last seven years, Makinde stated, "People said, ‘Oh, so Seyi, you did not mentor anyone during these seven years in government who can take over from you without the taint of APC?’ And I ask them, aren’t Morohunkola Thomas or Bimbo Adekanbi from Oyo State? If you’re from Oyo State, loyal to Oyo State, and have capacity, we will support you, blind to party colorations but open to the ability that can advance Oyo State."
As he concluded, Makinde noted that Oyo State is no longer just identifying opportunities but is now focused on creating robust systems capable of fostering sustainable long-term growth and development.
Why This Matters
This election cycle presents a crucial opportunity for Oyo State to move beyond traditional political influences and focus on the potential of capable leadership committed to genuine progress.
