Legal Battle Against OpenAI After Tragic School Shooting
The family of Maya Gebala, a young girl fighting for her life after a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, is taking legal action against OpenAI.
Gebala's family is suing the AI company for negligence, claiming OpenAI failed to notify authorities about Jesse Van Rootselaar's disturbing activity on its ChatGPT platform.
Van Rootselaar, an 18-year-old transgender woman, was responsible for the horrific shooting that took place in 2025, claiming eight lives, including five children and a teacher.
OpenAI had banned Van Rootselaar's account eight months prior due to concerns related to violent activity but did not contact law enforcement.
The law firm representing Gebala's family, Rice, Parsons, Leoni, and Elliot, stated that the lawsuit aims to uncover the full truth, hold OpenAI accountable, and seek justice for the devastating harm caused.
OpenAI's Response and Security Measures
In response to the incident, OpenAI executives met with Canadian officials in Ottawa to discuss security protocols. The company's CEO, Sam Altman, also engaged in direct talks with British Columbia Premier David Eby.
OpenAI acknowledged that their updated security measures would have led them to inform Canadian police about Van Rootselaar's account. These changes include consulting experts to assess the risk of violent behavior.
The company expressed its commitment to collaborating with authorities to prevent similar tragedies.
Meanwhile, Maya Gebala remains in critical condition, having undergone multiple brain surgeries and facing an uncertain future.
