The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State has been hit by a major defection as its former governorship candidate, Dr Tonte Ibraye, officially resigned from the party, warning that its candidates for the 2027 general elections are standing on “quicksand.”
Ibraye’s resignation was conveyed in a letter dated September 24, 2026, addressed to the ADC Ward Chairman in Degema Ward 16, Bille, stating that his exit takes immediate effect
In his letter, the former gubernatorial flagbearer cited internal factionalization, illegal displacement of party executives, and ongoing leadership tussles surrounding a faction led by former Senate President David Mark
Ibraye voiced his concerns over new entrants attempting to push out legitimate, long-serving party leaders across the country
He warned that candidates emerging from the current leadership dispute risks eventual legal disqualification
“The continued attempt by a disputed leadership to determine ADC candidates for the 2027 elections raises fundamental questions about the legitimacy and stability of such candidatures,” Ibraye stated, adding that political tickets forged under the current crisis are built “on quicksand rather than solid ground”
He stressed that no political party can present a credible alternative to voters when its own organizational foundation remains embroiled in legal battles
Beyond internal party friction, Ibraye criticized the broader opposition bloc for failing to articulate a clear vision for the nation
He argued that the opposition was focused on unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu rather than offering concrete, actionable policies to improve the lives of Nigerians
“I have therefore decided that I can no longer remain on what I consider a sinking political ship,” Ibraye wrote
