Former Deputy Governor of Imo State, Eze Madumere, has officially defected to the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), days after announcing his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC.
Madumere made the declaration on Wednesday at his residence in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, stating that his decision followed extensive consultations with his family, political associates, and supporters.
“My dear revered colleagues, supporters and well wishers, after deep reflections and broad consultations with my family, mentors and supporters, I have taken a step into what my conscience prefers. Today, I have decided to officially inform you of my resignation from the All Progressive Congress, APC with effect from today March 17, 2026 and my entry into the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),” he said.
The former deputy governor said his resignation from the APC was driven by what he described as the party’s failure to uphold its core values.
According to him, the decision was not borne out of malice but necessity, noting that he could no longer remain in a political structure that does not reward loyalty and allegedly marginalises committed members.
He added that the APC, in its current form, has deviated from the ideals upon which it was founded.
Madumere also expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunities it gave him to serve, including his tenure as deputy governor of Imo State between 2013 and 2019.
“For the records, my departure from the APC is not borne out of malice, but of necessity. I have come to terms with the notion that I could no longer continue to be an appendage of a party that does not reward loyalty, but is frequently in the habit of disrespecting and marginalizing members who have stuck their lives for the unity, progress and development of the party. Indeed, my old party; the APC has lost its core objectives,” he said
Explaining his move to the PDP, Madumere said the party’s philosophy and direction align with his political aspirations, particularly in the areas of good governance, unity, and service delivery.
He described the PDP as a platform that offers hope, renewal, and a credible alternative for leadership, adding that the decision represents a new chapter in his political journey.
The former deputy governor noted that his move is aimed at achieving better governance and improved representation for the people.
Madumere reassured his supporters of his continued commitment to public service, insisting that his decision is not driven by personal ambition but by the desire to deliver better outcomes.
He said he would work with like-minded individuals within the PDP to promote democratic values, youth empowerment, and transparent governance.
“I have chosen today, to join the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP because; its ideas, philosophy, and direction align with my political aspirations and ideology. I therefore, see in this new chapter a sense of hope and renewal-a platform dedicated to real transformation and progress,” he said.
“Indeed therefore, I didn’t make this decision lightly. I held extensive consultations with my supporters, my mentors, and my family. Reflecting, I asked myself: How can we continue to champion progress when the vehicle for that progress is broken Down? The answer was clear: there is immediate need to seek a pathway for my political ideals -good governance, unity, and genuine service-align in consonance with the party’s direction,” Madumere added.
