Tragedy Strikes El-Rufai Family Amidst Legal Battle
In a somber turn of events, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, the beloved mother of Malam Nasir El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, passed away on Friday afternoon. Her demise casts a shadow over the ongoing legal challenges faced by her son, who remains in detention.
Confirmation from the Family
The sorrowful news was confirmed by her grandson, Hon. Bello El-Rufai, who shared a poignant message on Facebook. His post read: “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. I would like to inform the public of the demise of my Grandmother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai who passed away a few hours ago. She is the biological mother of our father, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. We are grateful for the life she lived and may Allah SWT bless her gentle soul. On behalf of our family, we seek your prayers.” The family's plea for prayers resonated widely as news of the matriarch's passing spread.
El-Rufai's Legal Ordeal Continues
Hajiya Umma’s death occurs at a particularly difficult time for Malam Nasir El-Rufai. The former governor is currently in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), following his arraignment on a 10-count charge. These charges primarily revolve around allegations of conversion of public property and extensive money laundering during his tenure.
El-Rufai has vehemently denied all allegations, pleading not guilty to every count. His legal team is actively pursuing his release. A Federal High Court in Kaduna, presided over by Justice Rilwanu Aikawa, recently heard arguments concerning his bail application. However, the court has adjourned the hearing on the crucial bail decision to March 31, extending the period of his detention and adding to the family's distress amidst this personal loss.
